iPhone Overheating: Causes, Quick Fixes, and When It's a Hardware Problem - Pro iPhone Repair

If your iPhone is hot to the touch, showing a temperature warning, or dimming its screen on a summer afternoon, you are not alone. Every July and August our Glendale shop sees a spike in phones brought in for overheating, and the cause is almost always one of a handful of things.

This guide explains why an iPhone overheats, what iOS does to protect itself, the fixes you can try right now, and the warning signs that mean the heat is coming from a hardware fault rather than the weather.

How Hot Is Too Hot?

Apple designs the iPhone to operate between 32°F and 95°F (0°C to 35°C). Warm is normal during charging, gaming, video calls, or navigation. Hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold, or hot while the phone is sitting idle, is not.

When the internal temperature climbs too high, iOS steps in. You may notice the screen dim, the flash disable, charging slow or pause, cellular signal weaken, or apps stutter. If it gets worse, you get the full-screen message: "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it." At that point the phone will only make emergency calls until it cools.

These protections are working as designed. Repeated overheating, though, permanently ages the battery, which is why it is worth fixing the cause.

Common Causes of iPhone Overheating

1. Direct Sun and Hot Cars

The number one cause in Southern California. A phone on a dashboard mount in July can exceed its limit in minutes, even with the AC on. The same goes for a phone left on a beach towel or a patio table.

2. Charging While Doing Something Demanding

Charging generates heat. So does GPS navigation, video recording, and gaming. Stack them, especially with a fast charger, and the phone has nowhere to put the heat. Charging on a dashboard mount while running Maps is the worst-case combination.

3. Cheap or Damaged Chargers and Cables

Uncertified adapters can deliver unstable voltage, and a frayed or corroded cable increases resistance at the connector. Both show up as heat, often concentrated near the charging port.

4. A Worn or Failing Battery

As a lithium battery ages, its internal resistance rises and it runs warmer under the same load. A phone that has started getting hot during ordinary use and also dies early is telling you the battery is due. Check Maximum Capacity in Settings, or read our guide on how to check iPhone battery health.

5. Background Activity After an Update or Restore

For a day or two after a major iOS update or restoring from backup, the phone re-indexes photos, re-downloads apps, and runs machine-learning tasks in the background. It runs warm and drains fast. This resolves itself, usually within 48 hours.

6. Thick Cases and Blocked Ventilation

An iPhone has no fan. It sheds heat through its frame and glass. A heavy rugged case, a wallet case, or a phone under a pillow traps that heat. This alone rarely causes a warning, but it tips a borderline situation over the edge.

7. A Runaway App

A misbehaving app can pin the processor at full load. Check Settings, Battery for any app using a suspicious share of battery in the background.

8. Liquid Damage or a Damaged Charging Port

Corrosion on the board or in the charging port creates tiny short circuits that generate heat with nothing running. If the phone is hot near the port while charging, or hot while idle after getting wet, this is a hardware problem that will not fix itself.

How to Cool Down an Overheating iPhone Right Now

  1. Get it out of the sun and into shade or an air-conditioned space.
  2. Unplug it. Charging is the easiest heat source to remove.
  3. Take the case off so the frame can radiate heat.
  4. Close demanding apps or turn the phone off for ten minutes.
  5. Do not put it in the fridge or freezer. Rapid cooling causes condensation inside the phone, and moisture is worse than heat.

Let it cool naturally. The warning will clear on its own once the internal temperature drops.

How to Prevent iPhone Overheating

  • Use a vent mount instead of a dashboard or windshield mount in the car, and keep the phone out of direct sun on long drives.
  • Charge with an Apple or MFi-certified adapter and cable. If you need one, our charging cables and power banks are tested to spec.
  • Avoid charging while gaming or navigating when you can.
  • Turn on Optimized Battery Charging, and use a charge limit if your model supports it.
  • Keep iOS and apps updated. Bugs that cause background battery drain get patched.
  • Replace a battery that has dropped below 80% health. A worn battery runs hotter and makes every other cause worse.

When Overheating Means Something Is Broken

Bring your phone in if you notice any of the following:

  • It gets hot while idle with the screen off and nothing running.
  • It is hot in one specific spot, especially near the charging port or the camera.
  • The heat started after the phone got wet, even if it seemed fine at the time.
  • The screen is lifting or the back is bulging. That is a swollen battery and should be replaced immediately. Stop charging it.
  • It overheats every day despite following the prevention steps above.

Idle heat is the one that concerns us most. A healthy iPhone at rest is room temperature. Warmth with nothing running points to a short, a failing battery, or corrosion, and all three get worse with time.

What We Check for an Overheating iPhone

At Pro iPhone Repair our free diagnostic for an overheating phone includes a battery test under load, a charging-circuit test with a known-good adapter, an inspection of the port for corrosion or debris, and a check of the board for liquid damage under magnification. Depending on what we find, the fix is usually a battery replacement, a charging port repair, or a cleaning and liquid damage treatment. Most are done the same day.

Book a free diagnostic in Glendale and we will find out where the heat is coming from.
